What is the Online Archive Extractor?

ToolMagic's online archive extractor is a free, browser-based tool that lets you unzip files online without installing any software. Whether you've received a ZIP archive from a colleague, downloaded a compressed file from the internet, or need a quick RAR extractor online, this tool handles it directly in your browser.

Unlike traditional archive tools that require downloading and installing desktop software like WinRAR or 7-Zip, this extract zip online tool works instantly from any device with a web browser. Simply drag and drop your archive file, browse the contents in a clean file tree view, and download individual files or everything at once. The best part? Your files never leave your device — all extraction happens client-side using JavaScript, making it one of the most private ways to unzip files online free.

How to Extract ZIP Files Online

  1. Upload your archive. Drag and drop a ZIP file onto the upload area, or click to browse your files. The tool accepts standard ZIP archives of any size your browser can handle.
  2. Browse the contents. Once uploaded, the tool reads the archive and displays all files and folders in an organized tree structure. You can see file names, sizes, and types at a glance.
  3. Preview file information. Each file in the archive shows its compressed and uncompressed size, letting you understand what's inside before downloading anything.
  4. Download individual files. Click on any file to download just that specific file. This is perfect when you only need one or two items from a large archive.
  5. Download all files at once. Use the "Download All" button to extract and save every file from the archive in one go.
  6. Process multiple archives. Need to extract another file? Simply upload a new archive — no page refresh needed.

Features

  • 100% client-side processing: Your files are never uploaded to any server. All extraction happens in your browser using JavaScript, ensuring complete privacy and security for sensitive documents.
  • File tree browser: Navigate your archive contents in a clean, hierarchical view that shows file names, sizes, and types — just like a desktop file manager.
  • Individual file download: Extract and download specific files from an archive without having to unzip everything. Great for pulling out a single document from a large archive.
  • Bulk download: Extract all files from the archive at once with a single click when you need the complete contents.
  • Drag and drop support: Simply drag your archive file onto the page — no need to click through file dialogs.
  • No installation required: Works in any modern web browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook, or mobile devices. No plugins, extensions, or software downloads needed.
  • No file size limits: Since processing happens locally, there are no artificial file size caps. The only limit is your device's available memory.

Use Cases

  • Opening email attachments: Received a ZIP file via email? Extract it instantly in your browser without downloading archive software — especially useful on work computers where you can't install programs.
  • Browsing downloaded assets: When you download icon packs, templates, or resource bundles from the web, quickly peek inside the archive to find what you need before extracting everything.
  • Working on Chromebooks or tablets: Devices with limited software options benefit most from this browser-based approach. Unzip files online free without worrying about compatibility.
  • Extracting files on public computers: At a library, internet café, or shared workstation? Extract archives without installing anything or leaving traces on the machine.
  • Quick file verification: Need to check what's inside an archive before committing to a full extraction? Browse the file tree to verify contents, sizes, and structure.
  • Handling client deliverables: Freelancers and agencies often receive project files in ZIP archives. Quickly extract and review deliverables without context-switching to desktop tools.

Tips & Tricks

  • Check file sizes first: Before downloading everything, scan the file tree to identify the largest files. This helps you decide whether to download selectively or grab the full contents.
  • Use selective extraction: If you only need one file from a 500MB archive, download just that file instead of extracting everything. It's faster and saves disk space.
  • Close other tabs for large files: When extracting very large archives (200MB+), close unnecessary browser tabs to free up memory for smoother processing.
  • Bookmark this page: You'll need to extract archives more often than you think. Having this tool bookmarked means you're always one click away from unzipping files.
  • Works offline too: Once the page has loaded, the extraction functionality works even if you lose internet connection — since everything runs in your browser.

Online Archive Extractor vs Alternatives

Most online archive extractors require you to upload your files to their servers, which raises serious privacy concerns — especially for sensitive documents, business files, or personal data. Services like ezyZip, Extract.me, and Unzip-Online all process files server-side, meaning your data passes through third-party infrastructure.

ToolMagic's RAR extractor online takes a fundamentally different approach. Your files never leave your device. There's no upload step, no server processing, and no temporary file storage on remote servers. It's also completely free with no file size limits, no signup requirements, and no ads. Just open the page, drop your file, and extract — it's that simple.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to extract files online?

Yes — ToolMagic's archive extractor processes everything entirely in your browser. Your files are never uploaded to any server, which makes it safer than most online alternatives. No data leaves your device at any point during the extraction process.

Does it support RAR files?

The tool currently focuses on ZIP extraction, which is the most widely used archive format. RAR support requires specialized decompression libraries and is on our roadmap for a future update. For now, if you have a RAR file, you can convert it to ZIP using a desktop tool and then extract it here.

What is the maximum file size?

There's no artificial file size limit. Since processing happens in your browser, the practical limit depends on your device's available memory (RAM). Most devices handle archives up to 500MB without issues. For very large archives (1GB+), make sure you have enough free memory and close other browser tabs.

Can I extract password-protected archives?

Password-protected (encrypted) ZIP files are not currently supported. Standard ZIP files without encryption are fully supported. We're exploring adding password support in a future update.

Do I need to install any software or plugins?

No. The archive extractor works entirely in your web browser — no downloads, no plugins, no Java, no Flash. Any modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) on any operating system will work.

Can I extract ZIP files on my phone?

Yes! The tool is fully responsive and works on mobile browsers. Simply open this page on your phone, upload the ZIP file from your downloads or files app, and extract the contents. It's one of the easiest ways to unzip files on mobile without installing an app.

What archive formats are supported?

Currently, the tool supports standard ZIP archives (.zip files). This covers the vast majority of compressed files you'll encounter online. Support for additional formats like RAR, 7z, and tar.gz is planned for future releases.

Will my files be stored anywhere after extraction?

No. Since everything runs in your browser, no files are stored on any server. Once you close the page or upload a new archive, the previous data is cleared from browser memory. There's no trace left behind.
